01 / Overview

Quick answer

A gypsum partition access door is a framed door faced with gypsum board, installed in a drywall partition or lining so that concealed services can be reached while the wall stays visually continuous. Jawdah supplies wall access panels in gypsum versions; sizes, frame data and the gypsum board type in the door are confirmed with Jawdah per project.

Overview

When a gypsum-faced wall door is the right choice

When a drywall wall hides a valve, cistern or junction box, a metal door in the middle of a painted wall can look out of place. A gypsum-faced door solves this by giving the access point the same surface as the wall, so that after jointing and painting only a fine shadow line remains.

Jawdah states that its access panels are supplied for walls as well as ceilings and in gypsum versions. Specifications for the gypsum partition door, including sizes, frame and board details, have not yet been published and are confirmed by the Jawdah team for each project.

Choose a gypsum face when the wall is a painted drywall finish and the access point should not draw attention: corridors, hotel rooms, offices, reception areas and residential interiors. In back-of-house or heavily used areas, a metal-faced door may be more robust; Jawdah's information indicates both gypsum and metal versions exist.

Construction

How a gypsum partition access door is built

In general, the door consists of a perimeter frame fixed into the wall opening and a door leaf carrying a gypsum board face. The frame edge is usually slim and designed to be skimmed or left as a fine reveal. The leaf is either hinged, often with concealed hinges, or lift-out with retaining cables, and is held closed by a latch or lock.

The face board should match the wall board in type so that the finished wall behaves consistently, particularly in humid areas.

02 / Performance

Specifying the gypsum door with the partition

State the partition build-up, including board type and number of layers, so the door face and frame depth can suit it. In wet rooms specify moisture resistant board for the door face if the wall uses it. If the wall will be tiled rather than painted, ask whether the door face can accept tiles, because a gypsum door is usually intended for a painted finish.

Where the partition has a fire or acoustic role, raise this at the enquiry stage, since no performance data has been published for the door.

Quality

Handover checks

Confirm each door opens fully without striking fittings, closes flush with the wall, and has the specified face board. Record door locations on the as-built wall elevations for the facility team.

03 / Applications

Typical locations

These are general uses in Saudi fit-out projects; suitability of a specific Jawdah door for each location is confirmed per project.

  • Hotel bathroom walls with concealed valves and cisterns.
  • Office washroom cores with plumbing ducts behind drywall.
  • Corridor walls hiding electrical and data junctions.
  • Residential apartments with meters inside lined shafts.
  • Hospital patient areas where a discreet wall finish is preferred.

Installation

Installing and finishing the door

Frame the opening with trimmer studs and noggings. Fix the door frame to the studs, bring the wall boards up to the frame and joint the wall. Finish the door face with the same primer and paint as the wall, keeping the reveal around the leaf clean so the door can open. Check the hinge or retention action and the latch once the paint has cured.

Selection pitfalls

Avoid these errors

These mistakes usually show up as cracked joints or doors that no longer open after the wall is finished.

  • A regular gypsum face on a door in a moisture resistant wet-room wall.
  • Tiling over a door face intended for paint.
  • Fixing the frame to board only, without trimmer studs.
  • Bridging the door joint with filler during wall finishing.

Choosing

Choosing the lock for a gypsum partition door

Once the gypsum face is chosen, decide how the door is secured. For public washrooms and corridors, see the manual lock page. For staff areas and frequently opened ducts, see the automatic lock page. The partition access doors overview compares wall and ceiling access.
