Lay-In Metal Ceiling Tiles: Aluminum, Galvanized and Stainless Steel

Jawdah lay-in metal ceiling tiles are square or rectangular metal panels with formed edges that rest on the flanges of an exposed T-24 or T-15 grid, produced in aluminum, galvanized steel and stainless steel.

Lay-in tiles are the most direct way to build a closed metal ceiling with full access to the void. Jawdah Industrial Co. Ltd. forms each tile with a turned-down edge that drops onto the visible flange of the Tee-grid, so the ceiling is installed by simply placing tiles into the grid modules, and any tile can be lifted out later to reach cables, ducts or valves.

The lay-in range covers five products: aluminum plain and perforated, galvanized steel plain and perforated, and stainless steel plain. All are produced in thicknesses from 0.4 mm up to 1.0 mm. This page gives a separate specification table for each material so that alloys, finishes and test references are never mixed.

Quick answer

Jawdah lay-in ceiling tiles drop into an exposed T-24 or T-15 grid. Aluminum tiles (alloys 3005, 3105, 1100; perforated in 3005, 3105) and galvanized steel tiles (ASTM A653M) come plain or perforated; stainless steel tiles (grade 201 & 304) come plain in a matte finish. Plain sizes are 600x600, 600x1200 and 300x1200 mm; perforated sizes are 600x600 and 600x1200 mm. Thickness runs from 0.4 mm up to 1.0 mm.

What a lay-in metal tile is

A lay-in tile is a ceiling panel that is not fixed to its grid: it rests on the horizontal flanges of the main tees and cross tees by its own weight. The grid remains visible as a narrow line between tiles, 24 mm wide for T-24 and 15 mm wide for T-15. Because nothing holds the tile down except gravity and the grid geometry, access to the plenum is immediate and needs no tools.

Metal lay-in tiles keep their shape in humid rooms, accept frequent wiping, and arrive with a factory-applied finish. They are the practical default wherever a closed ceiling must be opened regularly, for example in retail units, corridors, computer rooms, kitchens and healthcare circulation.

How the lay-in system goes together

The ceiling is built in three layers. Anchor bolts are fixed into the soffit and rod hangers are hung from them with adjustment clips to set the level. Main tees are clipped to the hangers, cross tees lock into the main tees to form the modules, and a wall angle closes the perimeter. Finally the tiles are tilted through the module opening and lowered onto the flanges.

Module size follows the cross tees: a Cross Tee 120 creates the long side of a 600x1200 mm module, and a Cross 60 subdivides it into 600x600 mm. Jawdah's T-grid lock design makes the grid module demountable without tools, which is useful when a light fitting or diffuser has to be repositioned.

  • Exposed grid: T-24 for standard sight lines, T-15 for a finer line.
  • Tile edges formed to sit on the grid flange.
  • Each tile lifts out independently for maintenance.
  • Plain and perforated tiles of one material share the same grid.

Plain and perforated lay-in tiles by material

Plain tiles give a smooth, unperforated face and a calm, continuous ceiling plane. Perforated tiles carry full circular perforation Ø 1.8 mm as standard with an acoustical black tissue on the back, letting sound energy pass into the ceiling void instead of reflecting into the room. Customised perforation sizes and designs are available on client request; perforation pattern and open area are selected per project.

Stainless steel lay-in tiles are offered plain only. Perforated tiles in aluminum and galvanized steel are offered in two sizes, while the plain versions add the 300x1200 mm format.

Stainless steel lay-in tiles — specification and stated references

Stainless steel lay-in tiles are produced in grades 201 and 304 with a matte finish and a plain face. The Jawdah data lists the ASTM product standards for the steel and describes the raw material as fire resistant, moisture resistant and corrosion resistant with high thermal conductivity; it does not give a fire class, a humidity test or a light reflectance value for stainless steel, so none is stated here.

Across all three materials, every test value is labelled raw material. It describes the metal the tile is made from and is not a rating of the installed ceiling.

Design points for lay-in metal ceilings

Choose T-15 when the grid line should almost disappear and T-24 when a conventional, robust exposed grid is preferred; the tile edge must match the chosen grid. Set the module from the room geometry so that cut tiles at the perimeter are at least a reasonable fraction of a full tile, and centre the grid on the main axis of the space.

In mixed ceilings, keep perforated tiles above occupied zones and plain tiles in circulation or service strips. Specify the same material and colour for both so the ceiling reads as one surface. Where hygiene or humidity drive the choice, weigh stainless steel or galvanized steel against aluminum using their own data rather than a common datasheet.

Installation notes

Install and level the grid completely before tiles are placed, and complete above-ceiling services first so tiles are not handled repeatedly. Wear clean gloves when placing coated tiles to avoid marks on the finish. Perforated tiles should be kept dry so that the acoustic tissue on the back is not damaged. Jawdah's installation manual is available in hard copy for site teams.

  • Fix anchor bolts and hang rod hangers at the designed spacing.
  • Level main tees with adjustment clips before inserting cross tees.
  • Fit wall angle around the perimeter first.
  • Cut perimeter tiles cleanly and protect cut edges.

Mistakes to avoid when ordering lay-in tiles

Lay-in orders go wrong mostly on details that differ between materials. Check each line against the right table before issuing a purchase order.

  • Ordering 300x1200 mm perforated tiles; perforated sizes are 600x600 and 600x1200 mm.
  • Specifying perforated stainless steel lay-in tiles; stainless is plain only.
  • Quoting alloy 1100 for perforated aluminum tiles.
  • Applying the aluminum Class 0 reference to galvanized steel tiles.
  • Ordering T-15 tiles for a T-24 grid, or the reverse.

Cleaning and access in service

Lay-in tiles can be lifted, cleaned and replaced individually, which keeps maintenance local and quick. Wipe coated and stainless faces with mild detergent and a soft cloth, rinse lightly and dry; avoid abrasive pads that could scratch the finish. For perforated tiles clean only the face and keep the backing tissue dry. Store a small stock of spare tiles from the same batch for future replacements.

Lay-in or clip-in for your project

Lay-in tiles favour speed, economy and unrestricted access, at the cost of a visible grid line. If the design calls for a flush ceiling with no visible grid, or for custom tile lengths up to 3 m, compare with clip-in metal ceiling tiles. For the full overview of all ten tile variants, see metal ceiling tiles.
