Lay-On (Square Edge) Gypsum Ceiling Tiles: Edge, Grid Fit and Options
A lay-on ceiling tile has a flat, square edge that rests on top of the exposed flanges of a T-grid; at Jawdah, every gypsum and GRG ceiling tile is offered with this Square (Lay-On) edge for T-24 and T-15 grids.
Edge detail decides how a tile meets the grid, how the ceiling reads from below and how easily tiles come out for maintenance. The square lay-on edge is the simplest of these details: the tile is cut square, placed on the grid flanges, and held by its own weight.
This page explains the lay-on edge itself — what it is, which Jawdah tiles use it, which grids carry it and how it differs from lay-in, tegular and clip-in details — so that drawings, specifications and orders use the same term for the same thing.

Quick answer
A lay-on (square edge) ceiling tile is a flat-edged tile that sits on the visible flanges of an exposed T-grid and lifts out by hand. Jawdah supplies plain and acoustical perforated gypsum tiles and plain and acoustical perforated GRG tiles with a Square (Lay-On) edge, in 600x600 mm and 600x1200 mm, for T-24 (24 mm flange) and T-15 (15 mm flange) Tee-Grid systems.
What 'lay-on square edge' means
A square edge is a straight, unrebated tile edge. 'Lay-on' describes how that edge is supported: it lies on top of the grid flange, so the underside of the tile and the face of the grid are in almost the same plane, and the full flange width shows as a line between tiles.
Because nothing clips the tile in place, any tile can be pushed up and tilted out of its module. This is why lay-on ceilings are used where services above need regular access.
Jawdah tiles available with a lay-on edge
All four Jawdah gypsum-based tiles list a Square (Lay-On) edge. For standard gypsum tiles it is the only edge; for GRG tiles it is one of three.
| Tile | Thickness | Lay-on sizes | Other edges |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plain gypsum (PVC laminated / painted) | 7.5 | 9.5 | 12.5 | 15 mm | 600x600 mm, 600x1200 mm (Metric / Imperial) | None |
| Acoustical perforated gypsum | 9.5 | 12.5 mm | 600x600 mm, 600x1200 mm (Metric / Imperial) | None |

The grid that carries lay-on tiles
Jawdah's lay-on tiles are designed to rest on the flanges of exposed T-24 and T-15 grid systems, and Jawdah's T-grid lists square edge (lay-on) tiles among its compatible tile types, together with lay-in, tegular edge and clip-in tiles.
Grid colour matters with lay-on tiles because the flange stays visible. Jawdah's T-grid is offered in 9 main standard colours, with other colours upon client request; see T-Grid Systems.

Lay-on, lay-in, tegular and clip-in compared
The terms are often mixed up in tender documents. The descriptions below are general; use them with the Jawdah data sheet for the tile you order. Metal tiles with lay-in and clip-in details are covered separately on Lay-In Metal Ceiling Tiles and Clip-In Metal Ceiling Tiles.
| Detail | How the tile is held | Grid visibility | Jawdah gypsum / GRG availability |
|---|---|---|---|
| Square (Lay-On) | Rests on top of exposed flanges | Full flange visible | All gypsum and GRG tiles |
| Lay-In | Dropped into the grid module, supported on flanges | Flange visible | GRG tiles, 600x600 mm |
| Lay-In Tegular | Rebated edge rests on flange; face sits below it | Flange visible with shadow line | GRG tiles, 600x600 mm |
| Clip-In | Clipped to a concealed carrier | Grid hidden | Not offered for gypsum / GRG tiles |
Where lay-on tiles are the right detail
Lay-on tiles suit offices, hospitals, schools, shops, airports, computer and utility rooms — spaces Jawdah lists for its gypsum tiles — where frequent access to air-conditioning, cabling and fire services matters more than hiding the grid. The perforated lay-on versions extend this to auditoriums, cinemas, conference rooms and studios.
Design guidance for lay-on ceilings
With a lay-on edge, the grid becomes part of the design. A T-15 grid gives a finer line and a quieter ceiling; a T-24 grid gives a stronger module and is the more common choice for larger areas. Choosing a grid colour close to the tile finish makes the grid recede; a contrasting colour emphasises the module.
On 600x1200 mm modules, align the long side of the tile with the main tees as shown on the reflected ceiling plan, and coordinate luminaires and diffusers to the module so that no tile needs an awkward cut.
Fitting lay-on tiles
Check that the grid is level and square before tiles are placed; a lay-on tile shows any twist in the grid because it rests directly on the flanges. Tilt each tile through the module, lower it onto all four flanges and check that it sits flat. At the perimeter, cut tiles square and rest the cut edge on the wall angle.
System components supplied with Jawdah lay-on tiles are the Main Tee, Cross Tee 120, Cross 60 and Wall angle, with Rod Hangers, Adjustment Clips and Anchor Bolts.
Quality checks for a lay-on ceiling
Look along the ceiling under raking light: every tile should be flat on its flanges with even gaps and no lifted corners. Confirm that cut tiles at walls are fully supported, that the grid lines run straight, and that tile faces are free of hand marks after installation.
Mistakes with lay-on specifications
Edge terms drive the order, so a wrong word becomes a wrong delivery.
- Writing 'lay-in' on drawings when the gypsum tile ordered is square lay-on
- Specifying a concealed grid for lay-on tiles
- Choosing a grid colour without seeing it next to the tile finish
- Expecting a shadow-line look from a square lay-on edge (use tegular GRG)
- Ignoring imperial/metric module differences when replacing tiles
Access and maintenance
To open a lay-on ceiling, push the tile up gently, tilt it and lower it through the module, holding it by the edges. Replace it the same way and check it sits flat. Keep a stock of spare tiles from the same batch so that replacements match the installed finish.
Why source lay-on tiles and grid together
Jawdah supplies its lay-on gypsum and GRG tiles with the Tee-Grid and accessories they are designed for, so tile size, edge and grid profile are coordinated from one source. Data sheets for each tile and the Gypsum Ceiling System Catalogue are available on request.

Frequently asked questions
What is a lay-on ceiling tile?
A tile with a flat, square edge that rests on top of the visible flanges of an exposed T-grid. It is held by its own weight and lifts out by hand for access.
Which Jawdah tiles have a lay-on edge?
Plain gypsum, acoustical perforated gypsum, plain GRG and acoustical perforated GRG tiles are all offered with a Square (Lay-On) edge.
Is lay-on the same as lay-in?
The terms are often used loosely. In Jawdah's data, gypsum tiles are Square (Lay-On) only, while GRG tiles list Lay-On, Lay-In and Lay-In Tegular as separate edge types. Confirm the edge on the data sheet before ordering.
Which grid do lay-on tiles need?
An exposed T-24 or T-15 Tee-Grid. Jawdah's T24 has a 24 mm wide exposed flange and T15 a 15 mm wide flange for a narrower sight line.
What sizes are lay-on tiles?
600x600 mm and 600x1200 mm. Gypsum lay-on tiles are listed metric or imperial in both sizes; GRG lay-on tiles are metric or imperial in 600x600 mm and metric in 600x1200 mm.
Can lay-on tiles be acoustic?
Yes. Acoustical perforated gypsum and GRG tiles have a lay-on edge and NRC & SAA from 0.25 up to 0.9 according to BS EN ISO 354, BS EN ISO 11654 and ASTM C423.
Why choose T-15 over T-24?
T-15 shows a narrower 15 mm line between tiles for a finer ceiling appearance. T-24 shows a 24 mm flange and is the standard grid for square-edge tiles.
Can lay-on tiles be used with a concealed grid?
No. A lay-on tile needs exposed flanges to rest on. Concealed ceilings use clip-in tiles on a clip-in suspension system.
