Acoustical Perforated Gypsum Ceiling Tiles with GYPCO PE Patterns

Jawdah acoustical perforated gypsum ceiling tiles are lay-on gypsum tiles with a perforated PVC laminated or painted face and white fiberglass acoustical tissue on the back, offered in six GYPCO PE perforation patterns for sound absorption in suspended ceilings.

Hard, closed ceilings reflect sound back into the room. In meeting rooms, classrooms, cinemas and open offices that reflection builds up as reverberation and makes speech harder to follow. A perforated tile lets part of the sound energy pass through its face into an absorptive layer and the ceiling void, where it is dissipated instead of returned.

Jawdah Industrial Co. Ltd. supplies acoustical perforated gypsum ceiling tiles with an asbestos-free standard core, a perforated PVC film or painted face, and an acoustic fiberglass tissue bonded to the back. The tiles come in 600x600 mm and 600x1200 mm, in 9.5 mm and 12.5 mm, and in six main perforation designs.

Quick answer

Acoustical perforated gypsum ceiling tiles are gypsum tiles with a pattern of holes and a fiberglass acoustic tissue behind them, used to absorb sound in suspended ceilings. Jawdah makes them 9.5 or 12.5 mm thick, 600x600 mm or 600x1200 mm, lay-on for T-24 and T-15 grids, in six GYPCO PE patterns, with NRC and SAA from 0.25 up to 0.9 according to BS EN ISO 354, BS EN ISO 11654 and ASTM C423.

An absorptive version of the gypsum tile

The perforated tile keeps the format of Jawdah's gypsum tiles — square-edge lay-on, PVC laminated or painted, RG, MR, FR or FMR types — and adds two things: a perforated face and white fiberglass acoustical tissue on the back. Together they turn a reflective ceiling into an absorptive one.

Jawdah describes the tile structure as helping to improve sound absorption and to control sound reflection in spaces that need better acoustic comfort.

How a perforated tile absorbs sound

Sound waves striking the tile meet a face that is partly open. The open area, set by hole size and spacing, lets air movement pass into the fibrous tissue behind the holes. Friction inside the tissue converts some of that energy into a negligible amount of heat, so less sound is reflected back into the room.

In general acoustic practice, the result depends on the whole build-up: open area, tissue, the depth of the ceiling void and any insulation laid above the tiles. That is why Jawdah states performance as a range rather than a single value, and why each pattern carries its own 'up to' figure.

The six GYPCO perforation patterns

Jawdah's acoustical perforation patterns are applicable to plasterboards, gypsum tiles and GRG tiles. Custom pattern layouts can be produced from the available designs according to client requirements. The table reproduces the pattern data exactly as Jawdah states it.

NRC and SAA are 'up to' values per pattern; the tile specification states NRC & SAA from 0.25 up to 0.9 according to BS EN ISO 354, BS EN ISO 11654 and ASTM C423.

Where perforated gypsum tiles are used

Jawdah lists auditoriums, cinemas, hospitals, shops, offices, airports, exhibition centers, conference rooms and studios as application areas. In Saudi projects the tile is often specified for classrooms and lecture halls, open-plan offices, clinic waiting areas, prayer areas within commercial buildings and corridors where footfall noise travels.

Acoustic test references explained

Jawdah states acoustical performance according to BS EN ISO 354, BS EN ISO 11654 and ASTM C423. In general terms, BS EN ISO 354 and ASTM C423 are laboratory methods that measure sound absorption in a reverberation room, and BS EN ISO 11654 converts measured absorption into single-number ratings. NRC (noise reduction coefficient) and SAA (sound absorption average) are single-number summaries of absorption across speech frequencies.

Light reflectance, water vapour and thermal references stated for the plain gypsum tile are not stated for this perforated tile, and no fire class is stated for it. Request fire data from Jawdah if the specification requires a class.

Choosing a pattern and thickness

If the target is the highest stated absorption, PE-06 (dual diameter, up to 0.9 NRC) and PE-02 or PE-04 (up to 0.85 NRC) are the starting points. If a quieter visual texture matters more, the micro-square patterns PE-02 and PE-05 read as fine texture from normal viewing distance, while PE-03 and PE-04 give a more visible, regular grid of holes.

Thickness (9.5 or 12.5 mm) is chosen mainly for stiffness and handling; the acoustic contribution comes from the pattern and tissue. Ask Jawdah to confirm the expected NRC for the chosen pattern and build-up before committing to an acoustic target in the specification.

System contents

The tile is designed to rest on the flanges of exposed T-15 and T-24 grids and is supplied as part of a complete system.

Installing perforated tiles

Align all tiles so the perforation pattern runs in the same direction; patterns such as PE-01 (oval) and PE-06 (dual diameter) show any rotated tile clearly. Keep the acoustic tissue intact and dry — a torn or wet tissue reduces absorption at that tile. Plan perimeter cuts so that cut tiles keep a clean margin of holes.

Laying insulation over the tiles changes acoustic behaviour and adds load to the grid; agree any such layer with the acoustic consultant and Jawdah first. Ask Jawdah for the hard-copy Installation Manual and Tests for this tile.

Selection mistakes

Acoustic specifications are often written from a single number without checking what it applies to.

  • Specifying NRC 0.9 without naming pattern PE-06
  • Assuming every pattern reaches the top of the 0.25 to 0.9 range
  • Mixing patterns in one room without a design reason
  • Transferring the plain tile's Class E reference to the perforated tile
  • Painting over perforations on site, which closes the open area

Cleaning perforated faces

Dust with a soft brush or low-suction vacuum along the line of the pattern; wipe PVC laminated faces with a barely damp cloth so water does not enter the holes and wet the tissue. Never repaint perforated tiles in place, because paint bridges the holes and lowers absorption.

Perforated gypsum or perforated GRG?

Both use the same six GYPCO patterns and the same NRC and SAA range. Perforated gypsum offers 9.5 and 12.5 mm and a square lay-on edge. Perforated GRG is 12.5 mm with glass-fibre reinforcement, adds lay-in and tegular edges, and has a stated weight of 10.25 Kg/M2. See Acoustical Perforated GRG Ceiling Tiles.

Which perforation pattern absorbs the most sound?

GYPCO PE-06 (dual diameter, Ø8 mm–Ø12 mm, 11.7% perforation) has the highest stated NRC, up to 0.9. PE-04 (square, 9x9 mm) has the highest stated SAA, up to 0.85.

Can I get a custom perforation layout?

Yes. Jawdah states that custom pattern layouts can be produced using the available perforation designs according to client requirements.

What thickness are the perforated gypsum tiles?

9.5 mm or 12.5 mm. Both are available in 600x600 mm and 600x1200 mm, metric or imperial.

What is behind the perforations?

White fiberglass acoustical tissue on the back of the tile. It is the absorptive layer that makes the perforations effective.

Are perforated gypsum tiles available in moisture resistant versions?

Yes. The types listed are Regular (RG), Moisture Resistance (MR), Fire Resistance (FR) and Fire & Moisture Resistance (FMR). Keep the acoustic tissue away from direct water.

What fire class does the perforated tile have?

Jawdah's data for the perforated gypsum tile does not state a fire class. Request it from Jawdah if your specification requires one; do not apply the plain tile's Class E reference automatically.

Which grid is used?

Exposed T-24 or T-15 Tee-Grid with Main Tee, Cross Tee 120, Cross 60 and Wall angle, suspended on Rod Hangers with Adjustment Clips and Anchor Bolts.

What does NRC mean?

NRC, the noise reduction coefficient, is a single-number average of how much sound a material absorbs across speech frequencies. Zero means fully reflective; values near one mean highly absorptive.
