Acoustical Perforated GRG Ceiling Tiles — Lay-On, Lay-In / Tegular

Jawdah acoustical perforated GRG ceiling tiles are 12.5 mm glass-fibre reinforced gypsum tiles with a perforated PVC laminated or painted face and white fiberglass acoustical tissue on the back, available in six GYPCO PE patterns with lay-on, lay-in or tegular edges.

Jawdah Industrial Co. Ltd. supplies acoustical perforated GRG ceiling tiles for suspended ceilings that must absorb sound and still stand up to frequent handling. The tile is made of fibre-glass reinforced gypsum with an asbestos-free standard core, a perforated face finished with PVC film or paint, and acoustic fiberglass tissue on the back.

It is the only Jawdah acoustic tile that offers lay-in and tegular edges as well as lay-on, which makes it the choice when an acoustic ceiling also needs a recessed tegular look. Sizes are 600x600 mm and 600x1200 mm, and acoustic performance is stated as NRC & SAA from 0.25 up to 0.9.

Quick answer

Acoustical perforated GRG ceiling tiles are glass-fibre reinforced gypsum tiles with a hole pattern and a fiberglass acoustic tissue that absorb sound in suspended ceilings. Jawdah's are 12.5 mm thick, weigh 10.25 Kg/M2, have a minimum core density of 820 Kg/M3, use GYPCO PE-01 to PE-06 patterns, and achieve NRC & SAA from 0.25 up to 0.9 according to BS EN ISO 354, BS EN ISO 11654 and ASTM C423, with lay-on, lay-in or tegular edges.

Acoustic absorption on a reinforced core

Perforating a tile removes material from its face. In general, a reinforced core helps a perforated tile keep its edges and corners intact through transport, installation and later maintenance. That is the logic of acoustic GRG: the sound-absorbing face of a perforated tile on the tougher GRG core, with edge options that standard perforated gypsum does not have.

Jawdah's listed features for the tile include mechanical stability, impact resistance, ease of cleaning and suitability for interior decoration and acoustical usage on ceilings.

How the build-up controls reverberation

Each hole is a small opening through which sound energy reaches the acoustic tissue. The tissue resists the air movement and absorbs part of the energy; the ceiling void behind adds depth to the absorber. The more open area and the better the backing, the more the ceiling absorbs at speech frequencies.

Reverberation in a room drops as total absorption rises, so in general a full ceiling of perforated tiles changes how a hard-walled room sounds far more than a few acoustic panels on the walls. The tile's NRC tells you how strongly each square metre contributes.

Perforation patterns available on GRG

Jawdah's GYPCO perforation patterns are stated as applicable to plasterboards, gypsum tiles and GRG tiles. Custom layouts can be produced from the available designs to client requirements. Data below is reproduced as given.

Spaces that call for acoustic GRG

Jawdah lists auditoriums, cinemas, hospitals, shops, offices, airports, exhibition centers, conference rooms and studios. Acoustic GRG is especially relevant where acoustic control and durability are needed together: airport gate lounges, hospital waiting halls, university lecture theatres, call centres and busy open offices in Riyadh, Jeddah or Dammam fit-outs.

Acoustic standards and scope

Jawdah states acoustic performance according to BS EN ISO 354, BS EN ISO 11654 and ASTM C423 — laboratory measurement and rating methods for sound absorption. These references describe the tile's absorption; they say nothing about fire behaviour. No fire class is stated for acoustic GRG, and the light reflectance, vapour and thermal references listed for plain GRG are not stated for the perforated version.

Combining pattern, edge and module

Choose the pattern for acoustics and appearance first, then the edge. A tegular edge on a fine micro-square pattern such as PE-02 gives a quiet, textured ceiling with a crisp shadow line; a bold PE-04 square or PE-06 dual-diameter pattern on lay-on tiles reads as a deliberate architectural feature. Remember that tegular and lay-in edges are listed for 600x600 mm; the 600x1200 mm module is lay-on.

Set the acoustic target in the specification as an NRC tied to a named pattern, and ask Jawdah to confirm the value for the actual plenum and any insulation above the tiles.

System contents

Acoustic GRG tiles are hung on the same Jawdah Tee-Grid as the other gypsum tiles.

Installation practice

Lay all tiles with the pattern in one orientation and keep the fiberglass tissue dry and undamaged. On tegular tiles, plan cuts so the rebate and the hole margin both look intentional at the wall. Remember the tile weight when luminaires, diffusers or speakers are also carried by the grid. Jawdah's Installation Manual and Tests are available in hard copy.

Avoid these errors

Acoustic GRG combines several variables; specifications go wrong when one is left open.

  • Writing 'NRC 0.9' without naming the PE-06 pattern
  • Requesting 9.5 mm acoustic GRG — the GRG tile is 12.5 mm
  • Asking for tegular edges on 600x1200 mm tiles
  • Applying the plain GRG reflectance data to the perforated tile
  • Repainting perforated tiles on site and closing the holes

Acoustic GRG compared with its neighbours

Against acoustical perforated gypsum, acoustic GRG offers the same six patterns and the same NRC & SAA range, but a reinforced 12.5 mm core with stated weight and density and two extra edge options; perforated gypsum offers a thinner 9.5 mm choice and lay-on only. Against plain GRG, it trades the closed, foil-backed face for perforations and acoustic tissue. See Acoustical Perforated Gypsum Ceiling Tiles and Plain GRG Ceiling Tiles.

Frequently asked questions

What is an acoustical perforated GRG ceiling tile?

A glass-fibre reinforced gypsum ceiling tile with a perforated face and fiberglass acoustic tissue behind it, used to absorb sound. Jawdah's tile is 12.5 mm thick and PVC laminated or painted.

What NRC can acoustic GRG tiles achieve?

Jawdah states NRC & SAA from 0.25 up to 0.9 according to BS EN ISO 354, BS EN ISO 11654 and ASTM C423. The highest stated NRC, up to 0.9, is for pattern GYPCO PE-06.

Can acoustic GRG tiles have a tegular edge?

Yes. Jawdah lists Square (Lay-On), Lay-In and Lay-In Tegular edges. Tegular and lay-in are listed for 600x600 mm; 600x1200 mm is lay-on.

How heavy is an acoustic GRG tile?

Jawdah states a weight of 10.25 Kg/M2 and a minimum core density of 820 Kg/M3.

Which perforation patterns are offered?

Six GYPCO patterns: PE-01 oval, PE-02 micro-square, PE-03 circle, PE-04 square, PE-05 micro-square box and PE-06 dual diameter. Custom layouts can be produced from these designs.

Is acoustic GRG moisture resistant?

The perforated GRG tile carries the fire & moisture resistance type. Keep the acoustic tissue away from direct water, which would reduce absorption and damage the tile.

What thickness is acoustic GRG?

12.5 mm. If a thinner acoustic tile is needed, perforated gypsum tiles are also available in 9.5 mm.

Which grid and fixings are used?

Tee-Grid T24 / T15 with Main Tee, Cross Tee 120, Cross 60 and Wall angle, on Rod Hangers with Adjustment Clips and Anchor Bolts.
