GRG Ceiling Tiles: Plain and Acoustic Glass-Fibre Reinforced Gypsum
Jawdah GRG ceiling tiles are 12.5 mm glass-fibre reinforced gypsum tiles, plain or acoustically perforated, with PVC laminated or painted faces and lay-on, lay-in or tegular edges for exposed T-24 and T-15 grids.
GRG stands for glass-fibre reinforced gypsum. Glass fibres dispersed through the gypsum core act as reinforcement, so the tile holds its shape and edges better under handling and repeated lifting than an unreinforced gypsum tile. Jawdah describes GRG tiles as giving harder edges and tighter dimensional stability.
Jawdah Industrial Co. Ltd. supplies GRG tiles in two faces — plain and acoustical perforated — with a fixed thickness, weight and minimum core density. This page explains the shared GRG data, the difference between the plain and perforated versions, and how the three edge options change the look and fit of the ceiling.
Quick answer
GRG ceiling tiles are suspended ceiling tiles made of glass-fibre reinforced gypsum. Jawdah's GRG tiles are 12.5 mm thick, weigh 10.25 Kg/M2, have a minimum core density of 820 Kg/M3 and are classed as fire & moisture resistance tiles. They come plain or perforated, PVC laminated or painted, in 600x600 mm with lay-on, lay-in or tegular edges and in 600x1200 mm lay-on, for T-24 and T-15 grids.
Where GRG fits in the gypsum tile range
GRG sits alongside Jawdah's standard gypsum tiles inside the gypsum ceiling tile family. The difference is the core: standard tiles rely on gypsum alone, while GRG adds glass fibre. That change brings a single, fixed thickness of 12.5 mm, a stated weight and density, impact resistance among the listed features, and two edge profiles that standard gypsum tiles do not offer.
Jawdah's GRG tiles are offered in square and rectangular shapes, in a range of lengths and widths, with more than 20 PVC lamination film colours and paint finishes and an anti-bacterial paint option.

Three edge options and what they look like
Edge choice is the main design decision with GRG, because it changes how the ceiling reads from below. Jawdah lists Square (Lay-On), Lay-In and Lay-In Tegular edges for GRG; the descriptions below are general guidance on each edge type.
Availability depends on size: 600x600 mm GRG tiles are listed with lay-on and lay-in / tegular edges in metric or imperial, while 600x1200 mm GRG tiles are listed lay-on and metric only.
| Edge | General description | Jawdah sizes |
|---|---|---|
| Square (Lay-On) | Flat square edge resting on the grid flange; tile face and grid read as one plane | 600x600 mm (Metric / Imperial) and 600x1200 mm (Metric) |
| Lay-In | Tile dropped into the grid module and supported on the flanges | 600x600 mm (Metric / Imperial) |
| Lay-In Tegular | Rebated edge that sets the tile face below the flange, creating a shadow line | 600x600 mm (Metric / Imperial) |
Confirm edge and size combinations with Jawdah before ordering; tegular is not listed for 600x1200 mm.
Typical GRG applications
Jawdah lists halls, computer rooms, utility rooms, hospitals, shops, offices, airports and exhibition centers for plain GRG, and auditoriums, cinemas, conference rooms and studios for the perforated version. The PVC laminated face of plain GRG wipes clean, which Jawdah notes makes it a practical choice for hygiene-sensitive and high-traffic interiors.
GRG is a sensible step up from standard gypsum in Saudi public buildings — hospital corridors, airport back-of-house, school circulation — where tiles are lifted often for maintenance and edge damage on standard tiles becomes visible.
Stated test references
For plain GRG, Jawdah states light reflectance more than 0.8 according to BS 8493:2008, water vapour transmission according to ASTM E 96-00, and thermal insulation acceptable as per BS EN 1602:1997. For perforated GRG, Jawdah states NRC & SAA from 0.25 up to 0.9 according to BS EN ISO 354, BS EN ISO 11654 and ASTM C423.
The 'Fire & Moisture resistance' type is the tile classification Jawdah gives for GRG; no reaction-to-fire class or fire-resistance period is stated for GRG tiles, so request fire data if the project requires it.
Grid and accessories for GRG ceilings
GRG tiles use the same Tee-Grid suspension system (T24 / T15) as the other Jawdah gypsum tiles: Main Tee, Cross Tee 120, Cross 60 and Wall angle, with Rod Hangers, Adjustment Clips and Anchor Bolts. Because GRG has a stated weight of 10.25 Kg/M2, give the grid designer that figure when hanger spacing and grid duty are set. See T-Grid Systems.
Installing GRG tiles
Tegular tiles need the grid set out precisely, because the rebate leaves little tolerance at the flange; check module dimensions before tiles are opened. Cut tegular perimeter tiles so the rebate is re-formed on the cut edge or the cut edge rests flat on the wall angle, as the detail requires.
Keep tiles flat and dry in storage and handle them by the edges. The Installation Manual and Tests are held in hard copy by Jawdah.
Common GRG specification errors
GRG data is narrower than standard gypsum data, so a few assumptions cause most errors.
- Specifying a GRG thickness other than 12.5 mm
- Requesting a tegular edge on 600x1200 mm tiles
- Expecting RG, MR or FR variants — GRG is listed as fire & moisture resistance tiles
- Quoting acoustic values for plain GRG
- Omitting GRG weight from the grid design
GRG compared with standard gypsum and metal lay-in tiles
Against standard gypsum tiles, GRG trades the wider thickness range (7.5 to 15 mm) for reinforcement, a fixed 12.5 mm, stated weight and density, and lay-in / tegular edges. Against metal lay-in tiles, GRG keeps a mineral, matt gypsum character and PVC or paint finishes rather than a coated metal face; metal tiles are covered on Lay-In Metal Ceiling Tiles.

Frequently asked questions
What does GRG mean in ceiling tiles?
GRG means glass-fibre reinforced gypsum: a gypsum core with glass fibres that reinforce it. Jawdah describes GRG as giving harder edges and tighter dimensional stability than standard gypsum.
How thick and heavy are Jawdah GRG tiles?
12.5 mm thick, with a weight of 10.25 Kg/M2 and a minimum core density of 820 Kg/M3, as stated by Jawdah for both plain and perforated GRG.
Which edge types are available for GRG tiles?
Square (Lay-On), Lay-In and Lay-In Tegular. In 600x600 mm all three are listed; in 600x1200 mm GRG is listed lay-on only, metric.
Are GRG tiles available in acoustic versions?
Yes. Acoustical perforated GRG tiles use GYPCO PE-01 to PE-06 patterns with white fiberglass acoustical tissue on the back, and Jawdah states NRC & SAA from 0.25 up to 0.9.
Are GRG tiles moisture resistant?
Jawdah lists GRG tiles as fire & moisture resistance tiles. Moisture resistance limits damage from humid air; it does not make the tile suitable for direct wetting.
What finishes can GRG tiles have?
PVC laminated or painted, with more than 20 PVC lamination film colours and paint finishes, and anti-bacterial paint upon request.
Do GRG tiles need a special grid?
No. They use the Jawdah Tee-Grid system in T-24 or T-15 with main tees, cross tees and wall angles. Give the 10.25 Kg/M2 tile weight to the grid designer.
When is GRG better than standard gypsum tiles?
When tiles are lifted often, edges must stay crisp, a tegular shadow line is wanted, or impact resistance matters. For the thinnest or lightest option, standard gypsum tiles start at 7.5 mm.
