Metal Profiles for Drywall: Stud, Runner, C-Channel, Furring Channel and L-Angle

Jawdah metal profiles are roll-formed drywall framing members in hot dipped galvanized iron complying with ASTM A653M, made in thicknesses from 0.35 mm up to 0.9 mm, for installing gypsum plasterboard on ceilings and partition walls.

Jawdah Industrial Co. Ltd. manufactures drywall suspension systems for gypsum ceilings, gypsum walls and interior partitions. The profile range covers five named members: Furring Channel, C-Channel, L-Angle, Runner and Stud. For ceilings, the system component list specifies Omega, C-Channel and L-Angle; for walls, Stud and Runner.

This page is the technical reference for those profiles: material, thicknesses, fire and humidity data for the raw material, the standards as stated, and how to select and install them. For the hangers, clips, anchors and screws that complete the frame, see drywall accessories.

Quick answer

Jawdah drywall metal profiles are Furring Channel, C-Channel, L-Angle, Runner and Stud, made from hot dipped galvanized iron complying with ASTM A653M in thicknesses of 0.35, 0.4, 0.45, 0.5 and 0.6 mm up to 0.9 mm, with other thicknesses on request. The raw material is referenced to BS 476 Part 6 – 1989 and BS 476 Part 7 – 1997 (Class 1) and shows humidity resistance up to 1000 HRS according to EN ISO 6270-2.

What drywall metal profiles do

Metal profiles are the skeleton of a drywall system. They carry the weight of the boards, hold them in a flat plane and transfer loads to the floor, walls and slab. In a ceiling, they form a suspended grid; in a partition, they form a vertical frame of studs held top and bottom by runners.

Jawdah describes its profiles as offering corrosive resistance, humidity resistance and appropriate load carrying capacity for boards, and as safe, fast and simple to install. They are used in offices, schools, hospitals, commercial buildings, residential projects and fit-out work.

Jawdah profile range

The Jawdah product information names the following profiles. The component list then assigns them to applications.

  • Furring Channel
  • C-Channel
  • L-Angle (written 'L-Angel' in the source list)
  • Runner
  • Stud
  • For ceilings: Omega / C-Channel / L-Angle plus accessories
  • For walls: Stud & Runner plus accessories

Role of each profile

The roles below describe how these members are generally used in drywall framing. Section dimensions for each Jawdah profile are confirmed on request.

Material and corrosion protection

The profiles are produced from hot-dipped galvanized steel; Jawdah's specification describes the material as hot dipped galvanized iron complying with American ASTM A653M. ASTM A653M covers steel sheet that is zinc-coated by the hot-dip process, so the protection is applied before the strip is roll-formed.

For humidity, Jawdah states raw-material resistance up to 1000 HRS according to EN ISO 6270-2, a condensation-atmosphere test method. Jawdah also describes the profiles as environmentally friendly and recyclable.

Standards and their scope

Every reference below applies to the steel raw material, not to a finished ceiling or partition. A fire classification for a wall or ceiling comes from testing the complete assembly with its boards, and Jawdah's data does not state one for its systems.

Selecting profile thickness

Thickness is the main variable Jawdah offers within each profile. As general guidance, the lighter gauges suit ceilings and low partitions with single board layers, while the heavier gauges up to 0.9 mm are chosen for taller partitions, multi-layer boarding, door openings, and walls that carry fixtures. Jawdah notes that the right components are chosen according to ceiling layout, wall height, load requirements and installation details.

Jawdah does not publish span or height tables in its product data, so the stud centres, maximum heights and hanger spacing for a project should be set by the project engineer using the Drywall Suspension System Technical Data Sheet and the Gypsum Ceiling System Catalogue.

Compatible boards and accessories

The same profiles carry all Jawdah gypsum boards, RG, FR, MR and FMR, as well as acoustic perforated plasterboards, whose specification lists standard drywall systems of Omega, C-Channel and angle for ceilings and Stud and Runner for wall partitions.

Profiles are joined and suspended with Jawdah galvanized accessories: Omega clips and C-Channel clips (BD2) for the ceiling grid, rod hangers of Ø3.8 mm with adjustment clips or Ø6 mm threaded rod for suspension, anchors into the slab, and metal fixation screws of 13 mm up to 38 mm for profile-to-profile fixing.

Installation notes

Cut profiles with snips or a cold-cutting saw rather than abrasive discs, which burn off the zinc at the cut. Keep cuts square so studs seat fully in runners. Fix runners and perimeter angles at regular intervals into the substrate, then place studs or hang channels as drawn.

Store profiles off the ground and dry on site, and avoid damaging the galvanized coating during handling. The Installation Manual and Tests for the system are available in hard copy from Jawdah.

Inspection points

Check the frame before any board is fixed.

  • Profile type and thickness match the approved submittal
  • Galvanized coating intact, no rust or damaged sections
  • Studs plumb and fully seated in runners
  • Ceiling channels level and hung at the designed spacing
  • Perimeter angles straight and securely fixed
  • Clips fully engaged at every channel crossing

Profile selection mistakes

These mistakes are behind most bowed walls and sagging ceilings.

  • Specifying only the profile name without a thickness
  • Using the thinnest gauge for tall or heavily loaded walls
  • Quoting raw-material BS 476 results as a wall fire rating
  • Mixing profiles from different systems that do not interlock
  • Leaving ungalvanized cut-ends exposed in humid areas without touch-up

Why Jawdah profiles

Jawdah manufactures its drywall suspension systems and supplies them with the required suspension accessories and with its own gypsum boards, so the whole frame and board package can be approved and delivered together across Saudi Arabia. Technical documents named for the profiles are the Drywall Suspension System Technical Data Sheet and the Gypsum Ceiling System Catalogue, plus the Installation Manual and Tests in hard copy, all requested from the Jawdah team.

Frequently asked questions

Which metal profiles does Jawdah make for drywall?

Furring Channel, C-Channel, L-Angle, Runner and Stud. Ceilings use Omega, C-Channel and L-Angle; walls use Stud and Runner.

What thicknesses are available?

0.35, 0.4, 0.45, 0.5 and 0.6 mm, up to 0.9 mm. Other thicknesses are available upon request.

What steel are the profiles made from?

Hot dipped galvanized iron complying with ASTM A653M, which covers zinc-coated steel sheet made by the hot-dip process.

Are the profiles fire rated?

Jawdah gives raw-material fire data: fire propagation per BS 476 Part 6 – 1989, surface flame spread Class 1 per BS 476 Part 7 – 1997 and fire reaction class A1. These are not a fire rating for a finished wall or ceiling.

How resistant are the profiles to humidity?

Jawdah states raw-material humidity resistance up to 1000 HRS according to EN ISO 6270-2, along with corrosive resistance.

What is the difference between a stud and a runner?

The runner is the track fixed to the floor and soffit; the stud is the vertical member that sits inside the runners and carries the boards.

Can the same profiles be used for acoustic perforated boards?

Yes. Jawdah's acoustic plasterboard specification lists the standard drywall systems: Omega, C-Channel and angle for ceilings and Stud and Runner for wall partitions.

Does Jawdah publish maximum wall heights for its studs?

No height tables are given in Jawdah's product data. Heights and spacing are set by the project design using the system documents, which are requested from Jawdah.
