Strip Ceiling Suspension Systems: C, R and V Carriers

Jawdah strip ceiling suspension systems are hot dipped galvanized steel carriers, matched to each C, R and V aluminum strip profile, supplied with aluminum border and wall angles and the suspension accessories needed to hang them.

A linear strip ceiling only looks straight if its carrier is right. Jawdah Industrial Co. Ltd. supplies strip ceiling suspension systems along with all required suspension accessories, and applies a different carrier according to the strip ceiling type being installed.

The range covers four carriers, the 84R, 134R, 84C/184C and 150V/200V, all in hot dipped galvanized steel 0.55mm standard thickness and 4000 mm long, plus L, W and U angles in 0.4mm aluminum for the perimeter.

    Quick answer

A strip ceiling carrier is the concealed steel rail onto which linear aluminum strip panels clip at a fixed spacing. Jawdah supplies 84R, 134R, 84C/184C and 150V/200V carriers in hot dipped galvanized steel complying with ASTM A 653, 0.55mm standard thickness and 4000 mm long, with 0.4mm aluminum L, W and U angles in 4000mm lengths.

What the carrier does in a linear strip ceiling

In a strip ceiling, long aluminum panels run in one direction and are held from above by carriers that run at right angles to them. The carrier has a row of formed clips or teeth; each strip snaps onto those teeth, and the spacing of the teeth fixes the joint pattern of the whole ceiling.

That is why carriers are profile-specific. A carrier made for an R-type strip will not hold a V-type strip at the correct module. Jawdah therefore identifies each carrier by the strip codes it serves, and the angles at the walls finish the ceiling edge in a matching line.

    Jawdah strip carrier specification

The carrier data below is reproduced from the Jawdah product information for strip ceiling suspension systems. The individual C, R and V strip data sheets describe each carrier as hot dipped galvanized steel THK = 0.55MM in 4000mm length, which matches this table.

Carrier types and the strips they carry

Each carrier code reflects the strip profiles it serves. The 84R and 134R carriers are for R-type strips, the 84C/184C carrier serves both C-type widths, and the 150V/200V carrier serves both V-type widths. Order the carrier with the strip so that the code on both items matches.

    The strip profiles themselves are described on their own pages: C-Type (84C / 184C), R-Type (84R / 134R) and V-Type (150V / 200V).

System contents: carrier, angles and accessories

The Jawdah system contents are three items: the carrier in 4000mm length, the border angle or wall angle in 4000mm length, and the suspension accessories. Angles are offered as L, W and U shapes in aluminum, 0.4mm thick.

The angle closes the ceiling at walls and bulkheads and supports the ends of the strips. The individual strip data sheets describe the border angle as made of the same material as the panel and name L-Angle and U-Angle shapes, so confirm whether a W angle is required for your detail when ordering.

How a strip ceiling is hung

Carriers are suspended from the soffit with hangers and adjustment clips, levelled, and set parallel to each other at the spacing given in the technical data. Strips are then pushed up onto the carrier clips across the carriers, and the strip ends rest on, or tuck into, the perimeter angle.

Because each strip is held only by the carrier clips, strips can in principle be released one by one for access to services above. Long strip runs are joined over the carriers rather than between them, so that joints are supported and stay flush.

    Applications

Jawdah lists one application for these carriers: the installation of Jawdah aluminum strip ceilings. In practice that covers the places where linear metal ceilings are used, such as entrance lobbies, corridors, retail malls, transport buildings and semi-open canopies, where a directional ceiling guides the eye and the aluminum face is easy to clean.

For the full family of linear ceilings and how to choose between profiles, see Strip & Mesh Ceilings.

Galvanized steel carriers and aluminum angles

Carriers are hot dipped galvanized steel stated to comply with ASTM A 653. The steel gives the clip row its stiffness, and the zinc coating gives it corrosion resistance, one of the features Jawdah lists for this product. Angles are aluminum, the same family of material as the strips themselves, so the visible edge matches the ceiling face.

The Jawdah feature list for the strip suspension also names high quality properties of non-combustibility and mechanical stability, ease of cleaning, durability, easy installation, and environmentally friendly, recyclable material. No separate fire standard is recorded for the carrier, so no fire classification is claimed here.

    Design and specification considerations

Decide the strip profile first, since it fixes the carrier. Then plan the direction of the strips relative to the room and to light fittings, because linear fittings and slot diffusers are usually laid in the strip direction. Carriers run across the strips and need hangers along their length; plenum depth sets hanger length.

At the perimeter, choose the angle shape that suits the wall junction and the shadow line wanted by the designer. Where a strip ceiling meets a different ceiling type, detail the junction on drawings, since the carrier family stops there and another suspension system begins.

    • Strip profile and width decide the carrier code.
    • Strip direction relative to lights and diffusers.
    • Carrier spacing and hanger positions from the technical data.
    • Angle shape: L, W or U.
    • Junctions with other ceiling systems.

Compatibility with Jawdah ceilings and access panels

Each carrier is compatible with the Jawdah strip profile named in its code. The Jawdah metal baffle ceiling also hangs on a V-carrier of 4000mm length in hot dipped galvanized steel, THK = 0.55MM; whether this is the same part as the 150V/200V strip carrier should be confirmed for each order (see Metal Baffle Ceiling).

Where a strip ceiling needs maintenance openings, Jawdah offers aluminum strip ceiling access panels with manual lock and with automatic lock. Hangers, clips and anchors for the carriers come from the ceiling accessories range.

    Installation considerations

Fix the aluminum angles to a level line first, then install anchors and hangers and hang the carriers, checking that the clip rows on adjacent carriers line up. A string line or laser across all carriers helps keep the first strip square to the room; every following strip takes its line from that one.

Jawdah names the Strip Ceiling Suspension System Technical Data Sheet — C, R and V Type, the Metal Ceiling System Catalogue, and an Installation Manual and Tests available in hard copy for this system. These documents are requested from the Jawdah team.

Quality checks on delivery and on site

Check carrier codes against the strip codes on the delivery note, and inspect clip rows for bent teeth, which would show as a misaligned strip. On site, check that carriers are level and parallel before strips go up, and that angles are straight and continuous at corners.

    • Carrier code matches strip code.
    • Galvanized coating undamaged.
    • Clip rows straight and aligned between carriers.
    • Angles straight, with clean mitres or joints at corners.

    Common selection mistakes

Strip ceilings are unforgiving of mismatched parts, so most errors appear the moment the first strips are clipped on.

    • Ordering a carrier by strip width only, without the profile letter.
    • Assuming one carrier fits all strip types.
    • Omitting perimeter angles or choosing a shape that does not suit the wall detail.
    • Leaving hangers and anchors out of the BOQ.
    • Running carriers parallel to the strips instead of across them.

Why source strip suspension from Jawdah

Jawdah supplies the strip panels, the carriers that match them, the aluminum angles and the suspension accessories, so the clip spacing, strip edge and perimeter line come from one coordinated system. Ordering them together removes the most common cause of strip ceiling defects: parts from different systems that almost, but not quite, fit.
